Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL)
TEWL is short for Trans Epidermal Water Loss. It’s a process where water from within the skin is being lost due to evaporation.
Many people may think the answer to reducing TEWL is to use water based moisturizing lotions or creams. Unfortunately, repeated application of water-based products can actually promote dry skin.
Water based products use chemicals called emulsifiers. Emulsifiers are necessary to allow the oil ingredients to mix with water in the formulation. However, many emulsifiers can also disrupt the natural lipids in our skin increasing TEWL.
Most of the skin care products on the market today are water based, but extensive scientific research has shown that frequent use of certain water-based products can actually dry your skin by increasing TEWL.
Retain Skin Moisture
The best solution to preventing dry skin is to hydrate from within. One of the best strategies for doing so is to use oil-based products which provide a long-lasting protective layer on the skin surface.
Properly formulated oil-based products protect and replenish the critical barrier lipids, while helping retain skin moisture balance by reducing TEWL.
