You’ve been dreaming and thinking about the warm, carefree days of summer all through the long, dreary winter. Now that summer is here, are you ready to greet it fresh-faced?
And, more importantly, do you know how to keep your face fresh?
The cold, dry air of winter can really work a number on your skin, but the harsh heat and sun of summer are just as bad. Before you shed your layers of clothes and head for the nearest body of water, read these tips to not only keep your skin safe, but to keep you looking beautiful.
1. Apply Sunscreen — in All the Right Places
You know the sunscreen rule. You know that the sun can cause damage even if you’re just taking a walk or running errands.
But do you apply sunscreen everywhere? Even on the days when there’s no swimsuit in sight?
Don’t neglect the easy-to-forget spots like your hairline or part. These places often go unnoticed by you when the sunscreen comes out, but they certainly don’t go unnoticed by the sun. A sunscreen spray works best in those tricky places, as it’s difficult for cream to be absorbed there.
And don’t forget your hands! The skin on your hands is thin and prone to wrinkles and pigments. Apply sunscreen there as well.
2. Avoid Hot Showers
We can’t see many reasons why you’d want to take a hot shower in the summer, but just in case you’re tempted, listen up — Turn down the heat!
Hot showers can dry out your skin — and the sun is already going to be working its hardest to do that for you.
In addition, if you’ve been sweating a lot, a hot shower can lead to more acne breakouts. Cool it down for clearer skin.
3. Avoid the Sun — Sort of
No, you don’t have to avoid the sun altogether. You’ve been waiting all winter to feel the sun’s rays on your cold body.
But be smart about your sun exposure. If you’re heading outside between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm — the hours when the sun’s rays are most harmful — wear sunscreen, bring a hat, and look for shade. You can even carry an attractive parasol for a style statement, like porcelain-skinned Anne Hathaway!
Keep your pores clean by exfoliating regularly. Choose a product with a gentle exfoliate to lift and wash away dead skin cells, keeping you fresh-faced and smooth.
5. Eat Melons
Yes, the luscious fruit of summer is actually good for your skin! Did you know cantaloupes contain antioxidants that hydrate your skin? That’s the tastiest way to increase your radiance.
6. Stay Hydrated
Put down your soda, and pick up your water. And while you’re at it, add even more melons. Watermelon, to be specific. Leafy greens and berries also have a higher concentrate of water.
So many delicious ways to keep your skin hydrated!
7. Lovely Lips
Don’t forget to protect your lips. Keep that satisfied summer smile looking its best by hydrating and protecting your lips with a lip balm that has an SPF of at least 15.
8. Fake is the New Tan
Skip the tan from the sun (and the wrinkles as well!). Go for a sunless tan using a self-tanner with a spray mist applicator. The latest products don’t streak or turn you orange. Get all the beauty benefits of a sun-kissed look — without actually getting kissed by the sun.
9. Timing is Everything
Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside. Stand in front of a mirror, or have someone else apply the sunscreen for you so you can make sure you don’t miss a spot.
And hard as it may be, make sure you come out of your summertime reverie every few hours to reapply. Your skin will thank you later.
10. Exercise Enough to Sweat
Yes, this is still a skincare post and not a fitness post! Did you know exercise actually has benefits for your skin? When you sweat, your body releases toxins while loosening the dirt in your pores. Not only that, but sweating increases your circulation, giving you that nice, fresh, healthy glow.
Keeping your skin healthy through summer will prevent painful burns, chapped lips, and dry skin, allowing you to actually enjoy those longer days in just the way you want. Take a minute to explore Kaiderma’s hydrating products and body scrubs, and keep your bathroom cabinet stocked.
